Sri Lanka Garment Industry Was Hit By EU Policy Changes

In view of this, many of the former buyers in Sri Lanka have started pferring to Bangladesh to make Sri Lanka.

Coupled with the lack of work in mainland China and the floods in Pakistan, the total export volume of garments exported from Bangladesh in fiscal year 2010-2011 to July was 1 billion 600 million US dollars, up 31% from the 1 billion 210 million US dollars in the same period in 2009.

The National Arbitration Commission of the clothing industry in South Africa and the Sactwu will jointly propose to punish the manufacturers that do not implement the agreement of the committee, but the relevant people in the industry believe that the wage structure of the Arbitration Commission is not realistic.

According to the chairman of the committee, Ms. DeborahArends, 385 companies in the country have seriously violated the regulations, of which 372 have been found to be unqualified.

These non compliant manufacturers will be forced to close the factory, but this will cause nearly 23000 jobs to drain.

At the annual meeting of the Committee held in Cape Town, Labour minister MembathisiMdladlana said that manufacturers who did not comply with the law should be punished for crimes because they had stolen the basic rights of workers.

AndreKriel, Secretary General of the textile and Garment Industry Federation, said that the Federation will work to make the non compliant practitioners punished by criminal acts.
